Inside a rural Indian call centre – outsourcing builds a new life in the country

In a creeping transformation, the India’s countryside is undergoing.  You will find none of the fancy buildings, multi-cuisine food courts, bight shifts, 24/7 operations, accent neutralization training or the company gyms that normally accompany the arrival of India’s high tech industry or any of the other trappings of the big city.  The India’s smaller towns and rural areas are beginning to feel the impact of the change wrought by the country’s Information Technology sector.  The Indian Information Technology services and the back office processing companies have already transformed the urban economies.  They are looking outside the major conurbations and into the countryside where in they are altering the employment landscape and bringing about the social change.

Last year, India’s rural business processing outsourcing or the BPO firms notched up $10 million in the revenues.  The figure may seem insignificant in an outsourcing industry worth $60 billion in the revenues.  The employment in the rural Business Process Outsourcing companies grew 1.6 times during the period between 2007 and 2009. The 40 or so rural BPOs currently employs 5,000 workers.  The number is set to jump 10 times in 2012.  The rural and the small town Business Process Outsourcing are a few billion dollar business opportunity.  The organization locates its centers in the small towns with the abundant supplies of the talent as measured by the quality of the educational institutions in the area, low costs, availability of the bandwidth and energy infrastructure and the local entrepreneurs who are willing to invest as partners.

The nextwealth has four centers in three locations and employs 500 people.  The rural Business Process Outsourcing can provide sound economic benefits including the 50 percent reduction in the costs over the similar operations in Bangalore.  The company is also handling the creation of the online menus for the silicon valley restaurants.  The operations are run out of its Business Process Outsourcing in Chitoor in the neighboring Andhra Pradesh state.  The lures of the small town India are many, they are plenty of the skills.  The rural BPOs are cost effective as labor, property and other operational expenses are low.  The attrition rates are very low compared with those experienced in the cities such as the Bangalore and Gurgaon.  The Business Process Outsourcing are viewed as a boon to the rural migration reduce the stress on the crowded mega cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai advance standards of the living, promote gender equality and improve social and physical infrastructure.
