When Patni experienced the Eureka moment of outsourcing

The billion- dollar mega deal that brings Patni Computer System under the fold of US based iGate is historic and not just for its size.  It is literally historic because it was the founders of the PCS who developed the model of the outsourcing in 1972 and showed the way for others to follow the path.  One of the founders of PCS who was trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT and later at Sloan School of Management under Jay W. Forrester.  While working with Forrester at the consulting firm.  An opportunity in the publication of the academic books and journals since Forrester and the colleagues were engaged in writing such books.

In printing technology then was at the cusp of a change.  From the linotype to high speed photo typesetting machines driven  by the paper or magnetic tapes  The encoding data on such tapes was laborious and demanding.  The similar paper tapes coming out the telex and the teleprinters in India.  It started the whole thought that the process in about trying to outsource data conversion work to India.  The mere business opportunity in data conversion, it is hardly realizing that actually he was showing the way for the completely non-traditional way of doing business that would catapult India to the forefront of the global technology business at the turn of the century.

Mostly legal proceedings, before the shipping tonnes of the documents.  They designated the living room as the United States and the bedrooms as India.  Along with the written instructions, it was decided that there would be no oral communications between the people in India and the Unites States, simulating the ground reality of the poor telephone links between the countries.  A team of the two dozen data entry operators was then hired in Pune for the job.

In the year 1979, the PCS signed up one of the largest offshore software deals that is valued at $500,000 for the developing an apparel packages for an independent software vendor in the New York.  The Data Basis Corporation was the project that made the American firm realize that the value of the Indian programmers and it decided to stay and eventually DBC the first customer Infosys.    The model was replicated by the several other mini-computer resellers, the US mini computers makers discovered the software writing skills of the Indian engineers and Indian programmers.
