    Kolkata with its Growing Economy


    The main commercial, business and financial hub of Eastern India is Kolkata, formerly named as Calcutta. It is one of the world’s major centers of business with its cheap living expenses and huge economy, the city has been transformed to a major information technology hub in India. Some international giants like Cisco Systems, Deloitte, IBM, HSBS Global Technology, Atos Origin, Siemens, Novell, Skytech, ABN AMRO Bank, Lexmark, AIG, Capgemini, Foster Wheeler, Sun Microsystems, Honeywell, PwC and Intel Asia Electronics Inc are building up offices in Kolkata. Some Kolkata-based companies like Alumnus Software, TCG Software, UshaComm, Serenus Infotech, Metalogic Systems, Data-Core, RS Software, Intelliant Technologies and others are leading their way in development and growth. While ITC Infotech, Cognizant, Aditya Birla Minacs, Tata interactive Systems, TCS, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Wipro, NIIT technologies, Moser Baer Ltd., Sonata Software, CMC Limited, among other big Indian software companies have made Kolkata their hub of operations for the Eastern India. Being the superior metropolitan city, Kolkata has attracted major telecom and software companies beyond India and overseas to build their centers here.

    Located in Kolkata was the Eastern Region Council of NASSCOM, which is the chamber of commerce and the chief trade body of the IT-BPO industries in India. West Bengal is introduced as the third fastest growing economy in the country, due to the recent blast in the economy of Kolkata and the state unitedly. IT sector is expanding at 70 percent each year which is twice the national average. The city said to be one of the world’s major centers of business in GDP PPP (purchasing power parity) terms with its high economy value and cheap living expenses. Kolkatas’s GDP become $150 billion in 2009, alleged to be the third highest within India.

    Certain IT-SEZ and IT parks have arrived in the city, Kolkata today advertise 3 Software Technology Parks (STP) and more coming. Bengal Intelligent Park and Infinity which are privately-owned IT facilities are also attracted by big IT companies. With West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation (Webel) that serve as a single-window support center for all IT investors in the region, the government guaranteed ease of operations in Kolkata. Webel interacts with government to help obtain last-mile connectivity to get power connections and they collaborate with the local municipality to lessen the firms exposure to administrative issues. To cast their own IT- start ups,  this center provides a platform for promising and talented telecom and software professionals in Kolkata.

    The East Kolkata IT Park located at Nonadanga, Kolkata will be the fourth such aim of the West Bengal government. It is settled by the chief minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, its goal is to attract more IT firms and produce more profession in West Bengal. Within 2 years, the IT park would be completely operative, the park would have Infrastructure Management Centre and Regional Skill Development Centre plus hardware, telecom and networking laboratories to produce more employment. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee stated that certain big IT firms have already showed interest in building their facilities in the park.

    According to the chief minister, they are trying to build more IT parks in Siliguri, Kharagpur and Durgapur which will give more jobs for fresh graduates in the region. Debesh Das, the West Bengal IT minister claimed that the park gives progress with the state’s industrial development. On the other side, HCL also have plan to set up a center of excellence that would act as the company’s regional headquarters, more than 1,500 are going to employed at the hub. K.K. Singh, Rolta chairman said that they are going to invest  Rs 250 crore  which is equivalent to $55.02 million and build a software research and development unit. Kolkata is home to many nationally and internationally institutions and colleges that supplies a quality skilled workforce.
