India’s Outsourcing Boom Runs Into Trouble

Threatening India’s outsourcing industry is a chronic shortage of skilled workers . The call centers and outsourcing firms are growing fast, but their are human resources employees despair because of the most of the young Indians that they interview.  Some of the people in the Information Technology industry have said that only one in ten graduates is worth taking on.  India employs about the 350,000 people in the outsourcing industry and adds 150,000 new jobs each year.  Although filling those vacancies is proving to be a nightmare.  The industry needs to hire around 9,000 people but can not find them.

The industry faces a shortfall of a half a million workers in a few years time.  The crisis is set to worsen.  The specter haunting the industry is that it could lose its leading position as the world back office. If the industry has to go on paying a higher salaries to retain the staff it has.  The costs will rise and India will lose its biggest advantage.  If the industry falls to recruit workers at a reasonable wages.  The India will lose orders to countries such as the Philippines and China.

The Nasscom-Mckensey report about the experiences of HR executives.  The only 10 percent to 15 percent of the eligible workers are fit for the employment in the offshoring industry.  The confederation of the Indian Industry said that what taught at universities is now what the industry needs.  The Indian Industry said that what is taught at the universities is not what the industry needs.  The Indian governement has set up a Knowledge Commission to improve the Indian Brain power. Sam Pitroda who is based in the Chicago but visits India regularly is the Chairman of the commission. One of the tasks is to overhaul a higher education from the top to bottom.  About 80 percent of what is taught in Indian universities is obsolete.

British and American workers who have seen their jobs outsourced to India could get them back with one catch.  They need to move to India where their English and their accents will be an asset.   When the foreigners take calls from the respective countries, it helps that they know that the culture of the person  they are speaking to.
